Celebrate Your Leaders

By Joel Comiskey, Leadership Explosion

In 1992, several evangelical organizations conceived the “Pastor’s Appreciation Day.” The idea has caught fire, and in October, many countries and congregations appreciate their pastors. When my local church honors our pastoral team, I feel special and encouraged.

But what about those who are also pastoring the congregation? I’m referring to the cell leaders and supervisors. How are we honoring them? After all, they are volunteering to minister to God’s people.

Yes, we need to remind them that their reward is in heaven, but the Bible also tells us to appreciate our leaders here and now.

Paul says, “Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.” (1 Thessalonians 5: 12-13). One translation uses the word “appreciate” those who work hard among you.

Does your church have a culture of appreciation? Some churches keep demanding more from their leaders without stopping to thank them for all their hard work. How about your church?

As 2024 comes to a close, let’s think of ways to appreciate our leaders. A special dinner? Honoring them before the congregation? Thank you notes?

In my local church, we dedicate one Saturday to treating them to a special lunch, gift-giving, and words of encouragement. You might do something similar. How about a special plaque, appreciation dinner, gift package, or some other reminder of their service?

For November, let’s envision how we can esteem and bless those leaders who care for the flock. We can show appreciation privately and publicly. How will you do it? Let’s first look at the concept and then enter into the particulars. Click here if you’d like to receive these blogs directly to your inbox. We’ll cover:

  • November 03-09: The Biblical basis for esteeming leaders. The Bible references God’s reward for elders and those leading his flock. We often ask our leaders to care for members, evangelize, develop leaders, establish community, and perform other pastoral duties. Acknowledging their hard work and ministry is essential.
  • November 10-16: Find ways to honor your leaders. What are some of the things you can do? Have a special meal? Send cards? Give gifts? Top leadership prays and prepares ways to honor those serving.
  • November 17-23: Acknowledging the cell leaders in the Sunday service. You might want to take the month of November (each Sunday) to celebrate your leaders.
  • November 24-30: Remembering God’s faithfulness. In the Bible, God’s people were often asked to remember God’s goodness. Take time in the cell groups for testimonies and reflection about what God has done in the cells.
