We’ve spent recent months exploring pastoral leadership in depth. But what about the person leading the cell group every week?
In the cell church movement, we hold a conviction that sets us apart from traditional small-group ministry: the cell is the church — not a program of the church, not an optional add-on, not a midweek supplement to the “real thing” on Sunday morning. The cell is the very base of the church in action. Where two or three gather in His name, He is there. That’s not a small group meeting — that’s the church.
This conviction changes everything downstream.
When the cell is the church, the person facilitating that group isn’t just leading a Bible study or keeping the discussion on track. They are pastoring people. They’re caring for souls, noticing who’s struggling, celebrating who’s growing, and building up the body of Christ — making disciples who make disciples. Week after week, in living rooms, parks, and restaurants around the world, these faithful men and women are doing the work of ministry.
I love the word facilitator to describe this leader, because the root meaning of “facilitate” is to empower — to make things possible for others. That’s the heartbeat of cell leadership. But a great cell facilitator doesn’t stop at empowering discussion. They go further. They pastor each member: following up, praying specifically, knowing names, needs, and stories.
Facilitator and pastor. Empowerer and shepherd. The best cell leaders hold both.
