Jesus said of Himself that He is the Great Shepherd. The pastor’s role in leading a congregation is appropriately compared to that of a shepherd leading a flock. In the Gospel of John chapter 10, Jesus states that “he who enters by the door is A shepherd of the sheep” and within His next four sentences states clearly “I am the door”. We may conclude that those who sincerely come to Jesus as the door of salvation may then by His calling lead His people as a shepherd under Christ.

Sheep follow their shepherd without question. This places the responsibility upon their shepherd to search out the best paths and pastures for maturing his flock. His/Her inquiry for that direction must be made to the Great Shepherd directly. Once Jesus has provided direction to the pastor/shepherd, commitment to the vision is critical. Abraham, Moses, David, Jeremiah, Paul and others give us a biblical view of this combination of obtaining vision and committing to it for success and fulfillment. For example, Paul said to King Agrippa, “I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven…” and when warned by many including the prophet Agabus about the suffering that was coming to him, Paul’s response was, “I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” At the end of his life and ministry we hear him say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith…”

With the strength of a God-given vision embedded in our spirit we may confidently face our congregations declaring and living out the unfolding revelation, bringing inspiration and motivation to our followers!
