Counseling Levels

One thing we emphasize in our cell conferences at Elim is that the leader must recognize his limitations. The leader is instructed to move the case to the supervisor or the zone pastor before trying to give advice beyond his or her ability or capacity.

This should not be seen as a weakness in the leader but as an act of honesty. We remind our leaders that the cell structure is there to support them. The supervisory structure of cell ministry makes it easy to transfer difficult counseling problems from the leader to those higher up.

At Elim, almost all counseling cases are covered by the zone pastors. But when the zone pastors find a very complicated case or one that requires a more complex process of counseling, they refer it to the senior pastor.

Granted, some people, on their own initiative, request assistance of the senior pastor. In such cases, a phone call is made to the person in order to know general details of his or her case. We partially do this to root out the “sellers,” or those who simply need economic assistance (we have other ministries to take care of those needs).

At Elim, we try to be very sensitive when it comes to confidentiality. In certain circumstances, an individual will only want to share his or her need with specific people. It’s important to respect the person’s wishes and not force him or her to share beyond natural comfort levels. Our goal is to make everyone feel they are cared for and heard in the church.
